Does anybody actually care about the level of UK debt???

With the National debt now reaching 800billion, most UK taxpayers are either unaware of the consequences of this figure, or theyre aware but just dont care
The definition of Insolvent when applied to a Company is Unable to meet its debts as they fall due
Does this also apply to our Government If it has to borrow 175billion this year just to pay its dues, does this make it insolvent
I suppose when the figures become so great, most people switch off or just cant be bothered to try & work out what is actually happening.
Maybe, we should be asking a few questions

UK National debt is £800billion (the PSBR is £175billion)

A quick correction/clarification regarding yesterdays post on the UK national debt / PSBR.
The PSBR (as stated yesterday) is the difference between how much the Government earns (or raises in tax revenues etc) and how much it needs to fund the country. So if the Government was a Private Company, the 175billion figure is the amount it needs to stay afloat each year (including the necessary interest payments).
The total debt is actually 800billion
How many years this will take to pay back (or even just return to an acceptable level) is almost impossible to predict but unfortunately, one thing that we can all be certain of over the next few years is Tax increases
VAT will return to 17.5% in January 2010 and this will be followed by various other tax hikes
